There are two Group 1 performers in this years edition of The Archer.
Vega One – who we are happy to bet against with a poor first up record – 8 goes for just the 2x seconds.
The other group 1 performer – is Startantes who won last year’s Tatts Tiara. She was a top run first up over the unsuitable 1000m and the form was franked yesterday with Rothfire winning the Victory Stakes.
If the track is fair we think she will be running over the top of last year’s winner in Emerald Kingdom who was a blackbook run first up in the same race and has an impressive 2nd up record 9 goes for 5wins and 1second.
We have Startantes marked 3.0 and Emerald Kingdom marked 5.0
Suggested Play:
No3 Emerald Kingdom – to win

No1 Vega One: Triallled well, but happy to bet around with a poor first up record. 8 goes for just the 2x seconds.
No2 Gem Song: Ran fifth in this race last year behind Emerald Kingdom, drops back from 1500m -1300m – we have it marked at 13.0
No3 Emerald Kingdom: Won this race last year, where he beat a subsequent Group 1 winner in Apache Chase. Drawn the same barrier as last year, was a blackbook run first up, has a great 2nd up record (9s-5w-1p) we have him marked at 5.0
No4: Surf Dancer: Trailled ok, will get a nice run up on the pace, not sure he has a turn of foot to beat these over 1300m. We have him marked 9.0
No5 Weona Smartone: Forgive the run first up, hasn’t raced for 5 weeks, and he needs a soft run to get the 1300m. We have him marked 9.0
No6 Alpine Edge: Poor run first up will need to improve a lot to be competitive here – No
No7 Namazu: Can’t win; needs further.
No8 Maotai: Racing well, not suited to Weight For Age and needs luck from the barrier to get cover – we have him marked at 13.0
No9 Animate: Not good enough
No10 Blaze A Trail: Not suited to Weight For Age – No
No11 Startantes: Well weighted for being a Group 1 winner. She will get a long way back from the alley, and if the track plays fair, she is the one to beat after her good first-up run over the unsuitable 1000m. We have her marked 3.0
No12 Count Da Beans: Up a lot in grade. poorly weighted. Can’t win
